SKIN CARE…IT TAKES A VILLAGE!

Hello my lovely readers. 🙂

Before this year I never really settled into a routine.  A little ‘Clean & Clear’ here,a little moisturizer there but that was it. I didn’t want to post about my skin care products until I was at a point where I had something to show for it.  I have combination skin ,meaning parts of my face are oily(my forehead, nose and chin) and the rest of my face is dry.My genes have conspired against me I have the biggest pores ; my face sweats as if there are evil little leprechauns producing water under my skin and laughing about it. Especially on the nose!

This year I got a box full of ‘Forever Living’ goodies for my birthday. It comes with cleanser, toner, day and night cream and facial kit.Growing older has its perks I guess :-). All,and I mean ALL the products in their line are made from Aloe Vera. They’re also a good fit for me because they’re hypo-allergenic since I have sensitive skin.

I was motivated to take care of my face by the pretty packaging of the products …They just make me want to get up and use them even after I’ve thrown myself in bed with make up on at night.Oh and have you seen Lupita Nyong’o’s flawless skin?! Yeah. We’re heading there too.

So,here’s what my face goes through to get it looking like 10,000 bucks. 😀

1.CLEANSING.

Mine is a 2-step cleansing process.I wash my hands then pour water(warm is good) on my face then use the ‘Forever Living’ cleanser lotion to remove any make up,sweat, dirt, oil and debris. The guys at ‘Forever Living’ said  when using cleanser use a circular motion .Also, they advise that you cleanse your neck while you’re at it.Then I go in with a good ol’ Neem soap(Remember mwarobaini? ) for deeper cleansing. With this soap you literally see the zits disappear  right before your eyes! It’s only KSh.60 at Ebrahim.

2.EXFOLIATING.

This is not an everyday step. I usually interchange these 2 scrubs but my holy grail scrub is the ‘Eden Apricot Scrub’. I love the way it’s mild and doesn’t dry your face. You can even go to sleep without moisturizing! I got the Aloe scrub separate from the beauty box.One should exfoliate at least once a week or a max of two times.

3.TONING.

The purpose of a toner is to tighten your skin and close your pores after they have been unclogged by the cleanser. It also makes sure any residual dirt or make up is removed .Make sure you use one that’s alcohol-free as alcohol tends to be drying . I use mine with a wet cotton pad/cotton wool and dab it on. I’ve heard and read that Rose-water makes a good toner too.

4.MOISTURIZING.

The importance of moisturizer can’t be over-emphasized. I used to skip it because I thought my skin was too oily and that moisturizer would make things worse.I was wrong. Skipping moisturizer only prompts your skin to over-produce oil to compensate for the lack of it which leads to even more acne.Moisturizer hydrates your skin after it has been stripped of its oils during cleansing and  creates a smooth base for applying your make up.

Day:

When I wash my face in the morning I use the ‘Day Firming Lotion’.

Night:

After a night time wash,I use the “Recovering Night Creme’ .

5.SUNSCREEN.

It’s not just for the beach . Whether male or female you should use sun screen like your life depends on it…Well, because it does. Whenever you’re going to be outdoors shopping, working, strolling, swimming…Make sure you use it! It’s recommended you use SPF 15 and higher. SPF 30 and above is recommended for beach and swimming days or those days you’ll be lounging out in the sun and exposing your skin to the sun for a while . And it’s not just for the face but also for exposed parts like hands and legs. Re-apply it every 2 hours . They come in different forms ;Gel,sprays, cremes. I use this one after applying moisturizer. It also didn’t come with the box :

6.FACE MASK.

I use a mask when my skin is feeling some type of way 😀 . I try to do it at least twice a month. This one comes in powder form to which you have to add the liquid ‘Aloe Activator’ and mix it into a thick paste. It comes with a tiny mixing bowl, spoon and applicator.

This is currently where I’m at :

This is a bare-faced me! :) As you can see, acne scars on my forehead. It's a daily battle.

This is a bare-faced me! 🙂 Told you it takes a village.

There you have it. Of course my skin is not in tip top shape 24 hours a day, seven days a week 365 days a year. It’s state also depends on other things like diet(Hello fries and chocolate),hormones, stress levels, habits like touching my face ,not drinking enough water, allergic reactions to food and other products, among other things.I’m not saying you should go buy these products but if you would like to know more about them ,they have offices at Re-Insurance Plaza in town. ‘Forever Living’ products are not sold in regular shops, supermarkets or chemists. I also found a link which leads you to the Kenyan website with the whole ‘Aloe Fleur de Jouvence’ box as it comes(Although that packaging must be the former packaging). Check it out HERE. You can also get individual products here.

Which products do you use for your face?

Do share below!

Have a great weekend. 🙂
