JUST ‘CAUSE YOU’RE A FASHION/BEAUTY BLOGGER…

I think the term ‘Fashion blogger’ is more often than not misconstrued. I cannot count on both my hands and toes how many times people have gotten me wrong when I say I’m a ‘fashion blogger’. First things first ;When someone says they’re a fashion or style blogger(whichever the preference) it means the primary topic of their blog/website is fashion or style. Of course there are different types of fashion bloggers. Some blog about their own outfits, some about runway fashion and designers, others about fashion news and some even a cbzombination of all these. On top of that, some venture into topics like beauty, lifestyle, food, events and so on. It’s really how you want to do it. Some people like Kristina Bazan and Olivia Palermo are able to survive(and thrive) from blogging for a living, some do it as a hobby, some do it as both.

Now,just because you’re a fashion blogger

1….DOES NOT MEAN YOU’RE RICH.

Contrary to popular belief, not all of us are loaded. Sure some bloggers are able to fork out huge sums of cash for a pair of Christian Louboutin heels effortlessly, but not everyone. Some bloggers shop only after months of saving, some have jobs and are able to buy nice things every month and some go thrifting and find gems among those huge piles of second-hand clothes. Also, some stuff you see bloggers wearing are not bought, but were given by brands. Don’t assume! You don’t need a bucket load of money to look good.

You would not believe how much these pants were if I told you. :D

You would not believe how much these pants were if I told you. :D

SEE : The F word.feminism , I mean.

2…DOES NOT MEAN YOU’RE ALWAYS GIVEN FREE STUFF.

Guys. When I do a post reviewing Sleek make-up or Revlon products, it doesn’t mean they gave it to me. Of course brands give bloggers stuff to review and such posts are called ”Sponsored posts” . However, I usually buy products with my own money and I like sharing my opinion on  them on my blog to help you use your money wisely. If I partner with a brand,I will mention that fact for sure.

3…DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD DO THINGS FOR FREE.

Listen. Before a post goes up,there is time ,energy and money  that goes into picking outfits, photoshoots, editing photos and sitting down at your computer for at least 2 hours to create good content. Then after aaaall that,it’s laughable how a brand will approach you asking you to style their clothes and incorporate them in your blog post or just style for them in general. You have followers from whom they will profit . The worst part is,that they will want to pay you nothing and they will take their clothes back…HAHAHAHA!! That’s the biggest joke of the century. It’s also an insult to your intelligence. Some brands swear that they’re giving you exposure…Oh,honey.Exposure can’t even buy me a packet of braids. Plus, such brands you’ll find have a colossal advertising budget and all they’re offering you is ‘ exposure’. What of a blogger who already has that exposure you speak of? This exposure thing though…

4…DOES NOT MEAN YOU’RE SHALLOW.

Sure we love clothes and shoes . However, it doesn’t mean fashion bloggers don’t know or care about what’s happening in the world. Besides,we are lawyers,we are doctors, translators, economists, artists, engineers, scientists, we have bachelors degrees and Masters degrees. We can hold meaningful conversations on matters of current affairs, world politics, art, culture, science and so on.

5…DOES NOT MEAN YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYTHING.

Ok, we are experts on fashion and beauty but sometimes we don’t have all the answers. Like if you asked me about hair care,I’m not so well conversant but I’m learning.

SEE :Make up,you’re doing it wrong.

6…DOES NOT MEAN YOU’RE SELLING SOMETHING.

The number of times I have been asked if I was selling a particular item on my blog post…Fashion bloggers are not prima facie online shops. Although there are some fashion bloggers who sell stuff like clothes they have outgrown or just clothes they have in stock. Heck, some blogs double as blogs and online shops. But we are not always selling the clothes we are wearing on our blogs.

7…DOES NOT MEAN WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER OR GET ALONG.

If you asked me if I know a particular blogger, I may or may not know them. There are so many bloggers out there that I’m yet to discover or who are yet to discover me. Some bloggers are known to throw shade at others and have beef with each other.

8…DOES NOT MEAN YOU’RE JUST A FASHION BLOGGER.

Like I said, before a post goes up, as a blogger you are your own stylist, make-up artist, photographer(sometimes) ,writer and social media manager, you manage your own events and brand partnerships.Phew!

9…DOES NOT MEAN PEOPLE SHOULD JUST PLUCK YOUR PHOTOS FROM YOUR BLOG AND USE THEM.

How offensive is that? Some people can be so discourteous as to snatch your photo from your own website and use it especially for monetary gain without your permission. I think even though you don’t ask for permission,at least link the photo back to the owner’s website. Do not pass it off as your own. I’ve seen bloggers’ pics used by overseas or even local online shops, to sell stuff. I’ve also seen companies taking photos of bloggers and using them in a derrogatory manner. Shame on you :

10…DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE A DESIGNER TOO.

*sigh* One last time. A fashion blogger’s main focus is on fashion but no,we are not automatically designers.

See you next post! 🙂

    • Thank you Gabby.I know you get the struggle.
What many don’t get is that we are men and women of substance and are not materialistic. Whoever doesn’t believe that can go jump off a cliff.
